On the other hand, the constant increase in pollution in the seas and Oceans also negatively affects aquatic creatures. Water pollution is a major problem that needs to be solved. Many methods are used in determining water pollution. In this field, water pollution measurement with drone and blockchain is an impressive project.

Problems In Measuring Water Pollution

There are many official organizations involved in determining water pollution. Official organizations carry out water pollution measurement studies in certain regions at certain intervals. But in September 2020, the discovery of a large number of sea creatures dead on the coast of Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula mobilized environmental activists. Although the exact cause of death of marine creatures is not known, water pollution is thought to be one of the most important factors. However, many environmental activists and some scientists have claimed that water pollution measurement is not done properly and that the measurement results have been changed. At the heart of this claim is the lack of explicit sharing of measurement results with the public.

A group of robotic scientists based in Russia, which merged under the name Airalab, are looking for solutions to water pollution using a platform called Robonomics Network. IPFS and blockchain technologies are the basis of the system, which has been developed for about 2 years. With the help of Blockchain technology, robots and drones are planned to each have a digital signature and operate under certain protocols. In this way, it is envisaged that robots and drones will measure independently and that the information obtained from the measurement will be stored in a decentralized manner without changing.

Drone On The Volga

The Airalab team has been experimenting on the Volga river since 2018. The drone, used for trial purposes, is powered by solar energy. However, there are many parameters in measuring water pollution. As an example, parameters such as pH level, oxygen level, conductivity, temperature can be shown. The drone used in the trials has sensors and equipment capable of performing these measurements.

The drone used in the tests has a built-in computer on it. Information received from the sensors is transmitted to the computer via USB. Information transmitted to the computer is transmitted to the Robonomics Network platform using 4G technology. This information is secured through IPFS and blockchain technologies. IPFS technology prevents information from being changed, while blockchain technology allows information to be stored and measurement dates recorded. As a result, the information and measurement results from the drone cannot be changed. But thanks to the open source structure of the system, anyone who wants to can view the information.

Future Of The Project

The main goal of the water pollution measurement project with Blockchain is to draw attention to water pollution and provide an alternative method for water pollution measurement. However, this project has also shown that the environment can be observed without human influence by using blockchain, Internet of things and modern robotics techniques together. Therefore, the information obtained from this project can also help solve other environmental problems.

On the other hand, the use of drones in measuring water pollution can offer a significant advantage. As the measurements will be carried out by multiple devices in a given area, it is possible to learn more about the pollution status of the area. In addition, by checking the measurements made by different devices, accurate information can be obtained and misdirections can be prevented. Thanks to this system, it may be possible to make pollution maps more accurate.
